Is your skin healthy? Here's how you need to take care of your skin

Is your skin healthy? Here's how you need to take care of your skin
Skin is your body's largest organ; it is the organ that comes into contact with the rest of the world. Your skin acts as a protective barrier between your insides and the rest of the world, it also helps to regulate body temperature and acts as a filter. Skin exists in a constant state of growth, with old cells dying as new cells are formed. Our skin is affected from every aspect of our lives, from what we eat to where we live. Healthy skin is better able to fight the signs of aging, heals much faster and staves off potential diseases. Your skin health is important not only for your appearance, but more importantly because your skin performs so many essential tasks for your body. “The skin protects your body from the many viruses and bacteria that one is exposed to daily. It also protects you from the sun's rays, specifically ultraviolet rays that can damage cells.

Healthy skin produces vitamin D when exposed to the sun, and vitamin D is important for many body functions. Having healthy skin also helps your body keep its temperature at a constant level," says, Dr Sumit Malhotra, cosmetologist and dermatologist.

Adding further to the information, Dr Ashutosh Gill, health expert, said, "Unlike other crucial body systems, your skin is exposed to the outside environment, including things like germs, oils, heat and other potentially harmful substances. The skin is also incredibly complex, with multiple layers of tissue, collagen and glands. Because of this, lifestyle is the biggest factor that can influence healthy skin care. Since your skin plays such an important role in protecting your body, you should keep it as healthy as you can."

These daily habits can reduce skin health problems: Drink plenty of water: Drink at least 64 ounces of water per day. Even with a small amount of dehydration, your body functions in a less optimal way. The instant you're dehydrated, it will take a toll on your skin, causing it to look dull, flaky, saggy and loose.

Keeping skin healthy: Maintain a balanced diet to provide the vitamins and minerals your skin needs. Stick with fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and lean protein for best results. Always make sure to use sun block if you're going to spend time outside.

Proper skin care: Proper skin care means cleansing it properly. "Skin needs moisture to survive, so avoid using hot water when you wash your face, as the heat sucks moisture from your skin. Try using warm or cool water instead. Also, avoid harsh or chemical-heavy soaps, as they strip moisture from your skin while polluting it. Keep your skin moisturised by applying lotion within a few minutes of bathing. If you have a problem with dry skin, use an oilbased lotion on the problem area several times a day," added, Dr Swati Garg, dermatologist.

Face cleansing:

This has been told by all beauty experts umpteen times when asked how to maintain healthy skin. Even if you are too tired after a long party, cleanse all dirt and makeup from your skin. Your face needs to be cleared of all the chemicals. The makeup acts as a tight mask on your face keeping your facial pores clogged.

Sleep:

You skin rejuvenates and repairs itself mostly while you are asleep. Make sure that you not only sleep for eight hours a night, but that it is quality sleep. Getting your beauty sleep will banish those dark circles around your eyes and improve your skin tone, and, best of all, it is free!

Exercise:

It increases the circulation of oxygen and nutrients and releases toxins through sweat, which leads to clearer, firmer skin. Remember to smile. It's the best exercise for your face.
